The Story Behind Mr. Gopher's Adventures
Acknowledgement:
Thank you to my Nana and Papa - for the magic tucked in every corner of the cabin, the letters from Mr. Gopher, the cookie dough, the late night stories, and the kind of love that lasts forever. You gave us a childhood worth writing about.
To my brother, Joshua - thank you for being my first and favorite friend. For every barefoot adventure, every giggle, every raft trip and chipmunk chase. Childhood with you was magical.
To my Dad, Geoffry Jr. - thank you for passing down the magic of the cabin, and for carrying me when the rocks felt too high to climb. I’ve never felt safer than I did in your arms.
And to my mother, Alex - thank you for freezing every moment in time with pictures, so that I’ll truly never forget.
About the Author
Laurel is a bubbly, curious artist who grew up thinking every kid had a magical summer cabin, letters from woodland creatures and grandparents who made life feel like an adventure. As she got older, she realized just how rare and special that kind of childhood was.
She was born in California but moved to Oregon as a child - returning every summer to visit her Grandparents in the mountains of the Sierra National forest. That’s where Mr. Gophers letters began - tucked into a tin Band-Aid Box hidden beneath pine needles in the meadow.
Laurel has always loved being artistic, from drawing to painting, even pottery. She is new to writing, but now wanted a creative way to hold onto the magic of “the cabin” that was tragically lost in a wildfire, and to honor the people who made those memories shine.
She hopes to continue “Mr. Gopher’s Adventures” in future books, bringing to life the bedtime stories her Papa once told - about the forest, daring hikes and butterfly chases. She hopes to add new ones with blank spaces for grown-ups to write in their own child’s name, making the story (and maybe even a Band-Aid Box) a part of their own family tradition.
Fun fact: Laurel adored the forest but was (and is) absolutely terrified of bugs. Her butterfly net was mostly empty while her brother did the real catching.
The Real Mr. Gopher
Mr. Gopher was real - at least, to us.
Mr. Gophers letters started with Laurel’s Great-grandmother writing letters for her daughter, Georgiana (Laurel’s grandmother).
Georgiana then wrote letters from Mr. Gopher to her son, Geoffrey Jr. and eventually, she wrote them for Laurel, her brother Joshua, and their cousins too.
Each summer brought new stories, and wonder.
